Auto Air Conditioning Repair 101

When your car or truck A/C is not blowing "cold air", the first thought is to panic. $$$$ signs are going through your mind. Your A/C is broken and the repair is going to be expensive. This article takes the mystery out of automotive air conditioning and serves as a primer so that you can make common repairs yourself and save MONEY on professional repairs.

A/C Principles

There are books and publications that contain volumes of information on the subject of air conditioning repair. This information is often too technical for the you to learn how-to fix your auto air conditioning system.

In the nutshell, here is all that you need to know about the fundamentals of refrigeration so that you can fix your auto air conditioning system yourself.

Air conditioning is the process in which air inside the passenger compartment is cooled, dried, and circulated. Heat is removed from inside the vehicle and transferred to the outside air.

All air conditioners whether, it is an auto A/C, household refrigerator or home HVAC, work on the same principles. Namely, a liquid refrigerant is changed to a gas and then back to a liquid. If a change-of-state of the refrigerant is to take place, heat transfer must take place. The two (2) rules that apply to refrigerant are:

1. Refrigerant in a gaseous state collects, absorbs, and holds heat.
2. Refrigerant in a liquid state releases that heat.

A/C Operation and Components

For your auto A/C to blow "cold air", R-134A refrigerant must pass through and change state in three (3) components, one (1) receiver-dryer, and one (1) expansion valve that makes up the closed auto air conditioning system. The components of the system are:

1. Compressor - A device that pressurizes the heated refrigerant..

2. Condenser - A radiator for refrigerant that transfers the heat that was absorbed in the passenger compartment to the cooler air.

3. Evaporator - Is a small radiator located under dash in the passenger compartment. Liquid refrigerant entering the evaporator creates a pressure loss. The liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the air blowing across the evaporator. It then boils and changes state to vapor before it enters the suction port of the compressor.

4. Receiver-Dryer - Is a canister that stores the liquid refrigerant when the compressor is not running. It contains a desiccant that removes moisture from the system.

5. Expansion Valve - Is a metering device that controls the amount of refrigerant to the evaporator.

A/C Quick Check

A check that can easily be made to check the health of the A/C system is the "feel check". With engine running, turn the auto A/C control to "ON" and the blower on "high". Take a test drive to warm the engine until the A/C system pressures stabilize. Raise the hood. With the A/C "On", locate the large tubing connected and routed from the compressor (low side) to the expansion valve (inlet side) of the evaporator. Next, locate the small tubing that is connected to the discharge-side of the compressor and routed to the outlet side of the evaporator. When you feel these two (2) lines, you should observe these results:

1. The low-side line should feel "cool" to the touch.
2. The high-side line should feel "warm" to the touch.

If the high-side tubing is not warm and the low-side is not cool, further tests will have to be made as the system is not doing any work. There is an internal problem; such as, a defective component or a leak in your A/C system.

Testing A/C System

Before system temperature tests can be made, a checklist should be followed (below) to setup for testing the A/C system:

1. Set the A/C "ON-OFF" switch to "ON".
2. Set the temperature control to "maximum cooling".
3. Set the blower on "high" or the highest number on the control switch.
4. Temperature inside passenger compartment should be stable and getting cooler.
5. Engine speed must be a minimum of 1500 rpm's.
6. All windows should be be in the "UP" position.

Check Temperature

Your compact car or truck has a small capacity A/C system and a loss of "cooling" would be more noticeable than a larger capacity auto A/C system. If a noticeable loss of "cooling" capacity is noticed, a temperature check at the vent registers should be made. This check can be made with an instant read or digital temperature thermometer.. The discharge air from the vents in the passenger compartment should range from 38 to 42 degrees F.

A/C System Diagnosis

Assuming that the discharge air test measured at the vent registers is out-of-range, a system pressure test will have to be made. Professional A/C technicians connect a tool known as the manifold gauge set to the "low" and "high" side service valves of the system. For you to diagnose and look inside the A/C, it will be necessary to become proficient in the use of the manifold gauge set.

A manifold gauge set that is suitable for the needs can be purchased at most auto supply stores and Internet A/C tool and supply store fronts for less than $50.00. TIP: Look for a gauge set that has a built-in sight glass.

Locate the "low" and "high" side service valves.. Connect the hoses (they are a snap connector fit) to the service valves in the following manner:.

1. Connect the blue hose of the gauge set to the "low-side" service valve of the compressor.
2. Connect the red hose of the gauge set to the "high-side service valve of the compressor.
3. The yellow hose of the gauge set is connected to a vacuum pump or a refrigerant can to add refrigerant to the system. The yellow hose is not connected to the system at this time.

Static Test

If you find an out-of-range temperature reading, the manifold gauge set should be installed on the "low" and "high-side" service valves. With the engine "OFF" and the compressor and clutch not engaged, the blue "low-side" and red "high-side" gauges should show equal readings of approximately 80 to 120psi. These readings would indicate that there is a refrigerant charge in your A/C system. If the readings were 50psi on each gauge, this would indicate that there is refrigerant in the system but a LOW CHARGE. If the readings were 10 to 20psi on each gauge would indicate that there is little or no refrigerant in your A/C system.

Engine Running Test

Start the engine,.turn the A/C switch"ON" with the blower on "high" and run for a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes. Observe the reading on the manifold gauge set. TIP: A manifold gauge set with a built-in sight glass (mentioned above) will save you diagnostic time as most A/C systems do not have a sight glass built-in the receiver-dryer on the high side of the system.

With this feature, you look for bubbling refrigerant oil and refrigerant in the sight glass on the manifold. Oil moving through the glass would indicate that the compressor and clutch are engaged. Refrigerant is being moved from the low-side throughout the A/C system in the refrigeration cycle.

Low Charge

With the engine running, A/C switch "ON", and the manifold gauge set installed, a "low-side" pressure reading of 20psi over 150psi would indicate that your A/C system has a LOW CHARGE. The low reading of 150psi on the "high-side" gauge would be the tell tale that the system is doing very little work. A LOW CHARGE usually is an indicator that there is a refrigerant leak from a component on the "low" or "high-side" of the A/C system. A refrigerant leak in the system would have to be repaired for the A/C system to blow "cold air". TIP: REFRIGERANT DOES NOT WEAR OUT, IT LEAKS OUT. Some symptoms to look for a LOW CHARGE condition are:

1. Compressor clutch short cycling.
2. Clutch will not engage.
3. Little or no cooling.
4. Oily residue on hoses and components.

Leak Checking

For your A/C system to blow "cold air", refrigerant leaks will have to be found and repaired. Usually, leaks in an A/C system are minor and can be fixed with a screwdriver or hand tools. Most A/C systems use schrader valves for easy connection of the manifold gauge set. That said, these are no more than overgrown bicycle valves that use a valve core. When you are checking a system, the valves are the first place check for a leak. Other targets; such as, oil residue on hoses connected to the compressor is the second place that should be checked. TIP: When tightening the bolts to the suction and discharge ports of the compressor with hand tools, do not over tighten. Rubber 0-rings are placed on the suction and discharge ports of the compressor for sealing. The seals will create a leak when over tightened. Only tighten snug.

When your A/C system has a LOW CHARGE, a refrigerant charge will have to added to check for the leak. Refrigerant that contains a dye for leak checking a system is used for this purpose. The manifold gauge set, refrigerant, and a can tap valve will be needed to add refrigerant to check for a leak in the system.

Connect the manifold gauge set as discussed above. Connect the yellow hose to the can tap valve and front seat (turn clockwise) the valve. Close the blue gauge on the manifold gauge set. Open the valve on the can tap valve. Slowly open the valve on the blue or "low-side" gauge and let the refrigerant flow from the refrigerant can into the system until you see a reading of 60psi on the "low-side" gauge. TIP: Placing the refrigerant can in a pan of hot water will allow the vapor refrigerant to enter the A/C system quicker. WARNING: Do not invert the refrigerant can. Doing so will allow liquid refrigerant to enter the system resulting in a ruined compressor.

Professional A/C technicians use an electronic leak detector to find leaks in an system. Use a battery-powered UV leak detector kit and special UV glasses. This kit can be purchased at auto supply stores and Internet A/C supply store fronts.

The UV glasses should be worn when checking for leaks. Simply place the tip of the detector on a fitting or connection to each component to be checked in the A/C system. When a leak is found, a light greenish color will be seen through the UV glasses.

Air Flow

An often overlooked cause of your A/C system not blowing "cold air" is debris that clogs the condenser. Bugs, plastic bags, and leaves from city and highway driving will prevent air from passing through the fins of the condenser. The condenser should be cleaned with a cleaning solvent. Bent fins on the condenser should be straightened with a fin comb.

Restrictions

A restriction is a condition that is a blockage. Usually, it is traced to the outlet side of the condenser. Some form of debris has formed causing a restriction of refrigerant flow through the condenser tubes.. The passages in the tubes of most condensers that are used in compact cars and trucks are very small. An effective way to diagnose a restriction in your A/C system is the manifold gauge set. The "high-side" (red) gauge would move into the DANGER zone, over 300psi.

System Repairs

When a system has been opened, and a component removed, moisture has entered the system. For your A/C to blow "cold air", that moisture will have to be removed with the aid of a vacuum pump.

At this stage of the repair, you have two (2) choices to finish the repair of your A/C system. The first choice is take the car or truck to an A/C professional. At their shop, they will evacuate the system, check your work, and recharge the A/C system for a fee.

The second choice is to repair your A/C system yourself. You will need to borrow or buy a vacuum pump to finish the repair. A small 2-stage vacuum pump that is designed for automobile refrigeration systems is available for less than $100.00.

After replacing a component, moisture has entered the system during the repair. For the A/C system to blow "cold air" the moisture will have to be removed. Install the manifold gauge set to your car or truck service valves as described above. After repairs, your A/C system is evacuated and recharged by applying the below steps:

1. Blue hose to the "low-side" service valve.

2. Red hose to the "high-side service valve.

3. Yellow hose to the suction port of the vacuum pump.

4. Close the hand valve to the vacuum pump.

5. Back seat (open) the hand valves on the blue and red gauges of the manifold gauge set.

6. Connect the electrical power to the vacuum pump.

7. Open the hand valve on the vacuum pump.

8. Run the vacuum pump for three (3) minutes.

9. The needle on the "low-side" gauge (blue) show should be in a vacuum at 28.3hg.

10. A system with no leaks will pull a vacuum of 28.3hg in three (3) minutes.

11. If the needle of the blue gauge did not fall to 28.3hg, the evacuation will have to be aborted as there is a leak in your car or truck A/C system.

12. The leak will have to be found in the A/C system using the UV detector and UV glasses.

13. Once the leak has been found and repaired, continue the evacuation steps as described above for 25 minutes.

14. Front seat (close) the hand valves on the blue and red gauges and observe the needle on the blue gauge.

15. The needle should hold steady at 29hg, indicating a tight system with no leaks.

16. Any needle movement toward "0" on the blue "low-side" gauge would indicate a leak in the system and the evacuation would have to be aborted and conduct a search for the leak.

16.Look in the owners manual or service manual for the factory recommended refrigerant charge. It is usually from 16 to 28 ounces.

17.Attach the can tap valve to a can of refrigerant Make sure that the tap valve hand valve is front seated (closed).

18. Turn the A/C control switch to the "ON" position and blower switch to "high".

19. Start the engine and run at 1500rpm's.

20. Place the refrigerant can in a pan of hot water. Warning: Do not invert the can for this process as liquid would enter the system and ruin the reed valves of the compressor.

21. Continue this process until the factory charge (approximately 2 1/2 cans) has entered the system.

22. Shutoff your car or truck engine and let the A/C system stabilize. When the readings on the red and blue gauges are equal, remove the blue "low-side" hose from the service valve.

23. Restart the engine and remove the red "high-side" hose from the service valve.

24. Close the hood and take your car or truck for a three (3) mile test drive.

25. Place an instant read or digital thermometer in the vent register in the passenger compartment.

26. The temperature should range from 38 to 42 degrees F on a 90-degree day.

The Benefits of Resistance Training

Looking for Free Workout Routines? Try Resistance Training!

Resistance training involves activities that use weights, machines, resistance bands or even body weight to work your muscles properly. There are a ton of sites on the internet that provide free workout routines involving resistance training. It is also known as strength training. This can be extremely helpful in achieving a healthier body. This kind of training we usually associate with athletes who have to build up their bodies to perform better. Most people would think that when resistance training is done, the body will grow bigger. Actually it does not have to. Resistance training is simply about increasing the strength of the body, not always it's size. Although we traditionally think that strength training traditionally for athletes, it can be use by anyone successfully if done correctly. Resistance training basically strengthens the muscles, and leans the bodies fat stores. It can be used by any age group to achieve specific results.

How Does Resistance Training Work?

A resistance training program will include the use of various exercise equipment and machines like the bench press, dumbbell or barbell. However, the easiest and most convenient way to train with resistance for most of us with busy lives is by using resistance bands at home. When the equipment is used, the muscles of the body will be pitted against the resistance. The cells of the body will then adapt to the extra resistance. This will then result to enlarge and increase the strength of each muscle cell to help in the muscle perform contractions more efficiently. Before doing any resistance training, it is ,of course, best to consult with a doctor. This goes especially for people who have medical conditions such as heart disease, lung disease diabetes, kidney or liver disease. You should know the proper tools and proper exercises for the needs of your body. Of course, that's what www.plan-to-be-ripped.com is here for. We can give you a personalized assessment of what type of resistance training program is right for you.

One of the best things about resistance training is that it can be done with little to no expensive equipment and does not require a large amount of space. Doing push-ups is one good example. You can do it just about anywhere where there is enough space for you to move. These type of moves really are free workout routines. This time it is your own body weight that will be pitted against the muscles. So those who are a bit constrained in the budget can still do resistance trainings. For more ideas on economical workouts, visit us at www.plantoberipped.com

What Are the Benefits of Resistance Training?

1. Increase Bone Mineral Density

Bones are constantly remodeling, meaning the tissues break down at the same time they build up. The peak of remodeling takes place during puberty. However, as a person ages, our bone mineral density decreases as the remodeling is not as active anymore. This is especially a problem to post-menopausal women and the elderly, but does begin to happen in the early thirties. Bone mineral density is usually supported by the hormones and stress placed on the bones. To address the problem of not having the hormones and less stress, and to maintain the bone mineral density, physical activity is the next best option. Resistance training is one physical activity that can put enough stress on the bones to stimulate remodeling and increase bone density.

2. Increase Strength

In addition to increase in bone density and strength, muscles will grow stronger and become more developed as you progress.

3. Increase the Range of Activities
When your body is strong enough to carry some considerable weight, then you will also be capable of doing more strenuous activities. An increase in exercise lifts the mood and you will be more interested in life and a more active lifestyle. This will really create a snowball effect on your life and activities.

4. Reduce the Body Fat

Using and increasing the muscle mass (even a little bit) will increase the energy that is required by your body, even at rest. This also increases the energy needed by your body at during activities. The more muscle, the more energy is needed to be broken down to supply you body to function properly. This translates to more fat calories and fat being burned each minute. Thus with the decrease in body fat, you can expect the tone of the body to improve and you will become leaner....and did I mention sexy??

5. Improve State of the Elders

For the elderly undergoing a resistance training program will help improve their health and decrease the risks brought about by the age. They can be more independent, without needing to rely on other people for doing simple things. Being able to do so will also decrease the risk of injuries in the elders

6. Improve Heart Condition

Regular resistance training can result in a lowered heart rate and lowered blood pressure, especially after exercise. Thus, the risk of heart diseases is reduced.

This kind of training however must be properly done. It requires commitment and consistency. It will have to be done in a regular basis.

This is the real challenge when it comes to exercise and improving your health is consistency It's not hard to exercise for 30 minutes, but its difficult to consistently do this 5 days a week for 3 or 4 months.

How to Create a More Luxurious Master Bathroom

Your bathroom is your sanctuary, a place for you to escape from the children, the laundry, the dishes, or the guests that just won't seem to leave. Shouldn't you consider upgrading your home and spending a few hours dedicated toward bathroom remodeling? If there's little to no difference between the bathroom you use and the one the children use, then your bathroom is in definite need of a makeover. Follow these steps and you'll transform your boring bathroom in to a luxurious, spa-like getaway.

Color Says It All

Most bathrooms are adorned in blindingly white fixtures. From white tiled floors and walls, to too bright lights and even white cabinets and sinks, the word "sterile" comes to mind. Color sets the mood and feel of the room. A deep, richly colored paint such as a calming blue or green will give off a sense of relaxation and serenity, as opposed to the stark, harsh neutral white tones.

Soften It Up

Just as most bathrooms are decorated in white fixtures, so too are most bathrooms covered wall to wall in hard surfaces. To give off the feeling of "luxury", add soft touches. Plush area rugs and hang towels are ideal purchases to create a lavish feel.

Also, instead of typical white or neutral colored cabinet hardware, opt for a trendy marbled pattern that rivals even the priciest hotels in the nation.

Fancy Faucets & Fixtures

What's a fancy master bathroom without top-of-the-line tubs, faucets and showers? Upgrade your current tub with a jetted bath tub. For the ultimate relaxing soak, purchase a spa pillow. If you've got a standing-only shower, purchase a detachable showerhead.

Newer sink models offer electronic faucets; these high-tech fixtures will avoid overflow as well as diminish the amount of water wasted while you're brushing your teeth, or washing your hands. Additional sink models also feature designer ceramic, stone or marble vessel sinks. These sinks can be mounted above, partially above or even below the cabinet fixture.

Another way to transform your bathroom is by installing a new, advanced toilet. Some models come with automatic flush sensors, heated seats and lids, rear and front washing fixtures, air dryers and even deodorizers. When replacing or updating your toilet, also purchase new toilet paper holders in dark finishes to complete your bathroom's inviting look and feel.

Warm & Cozy

Many master bathrooms have cold hard-tiled floors. In addition to plush rugs, consider purchasing heated floor maps placed below your flooring to keep your toes toasty warm. These heated mats work with tile, stone, laminate and even wood surfaces. If this option seems a little too luxurious, consider purchasing heated towel bars instead. This way, you can enjoy the pre-heated towel immediately after soaking in the tub or shower.

Illuminate the Room

Any bathroom needs good light fixtures. Install new light fixtures above or to the sides of your vanity and mirror. This way, you'll reduce the amount of shadows on your face so you can properly apply makeup or shave your chin. Also, choose the right wattage of bulb. Avoid harsh overly strong bulbs as they may just look scary! By installing a light fixture with a dimmer switch, you can control how much you can or cannot see-and is ideal for setting a relaxing tone for a bath!

Cool Gadgets

Hotel master bathrooms feature nifty gadgets and tools that most homes do not have. Why not add these items to your bathroom as well? Fog-free mirrors are ideal for the on-the-go individual or family that needs to shower, dress and get ready quickly. Instead of airing out the bathroom or waiting for fog to clear, these fog-free mirrors eliminate waiting time, getting you out the door faster. Another bathroom gadget is a tooth brush sanitizing unit. These compact, decorative units eliminate germs and grim typically found on everyday toothbrushes.

Repair Holes in Your Wall From Door Knobs

Fixing holes in your wall can be a challenge if you have no idea how to repair the wall or even how it is built.

Have you ever slammed a door shut because you were a little mad a something of someone. Well now have you ever slammed a door open a little to hard and then hearing a sound like something just stuck to the wall.

Well now that would be the sound of your door knob going through the drywall or plaster. Oh crap now what do I do. And don't try to blame this one on the kids either. Right about now you are wondering how in the heck am I going to repair this and not let it happen again.

You should have a nice round hole in the door. Try to remove the piece of drywall without it falling into the wall. After you get this piece of drywall out set it to the side for possible reinstallation. Now get a measuring tape to see if the wall is framed with 2 x 4 or 2 x 6.

If the wall is framed with 2 x 4 it will measure three and one half inches in between the drywall or plaster. If it is a 2 x 6 framed wall it will measure five and one half inches in between the drywall or plaster.

We will use the 2 x 4 wall for our example on fixing the hole from the door knob. Cut a piece of 2 x 4 about 5 inches long and taper both ends of the 2 x 4 so you will be able to slide the piece of wood into the damage hole.

When you slip the wood into the hole set it on edge and screw the sides into the drywall. This will hold the2 x 4 in place. Next reinstall the piece of drywall you removed and screw it into the drywall. Now for the secret to finishing the wall.

Go down to your local home improvement store and purchase a round rubber door stop that glues onto the wall. These rubber and sometimes plastic door stops will be about 6 inches in diameter and work great for these holes.

You could also buy a few more of them to protect the walls from big bad door openers.

Sustainable, Ecological Or Energy Efficient Homes - What Are They All About?

We are currently going through a period of change in many levels. There is a change in the world climate with intense phenomena which were not expected to happen so soon. Our homes are wasting so much energy that they make the problem worse. At the same time there is a change in the world economy increasing the cost of buying and maintaining a property. Sustainable homes may benefit home owners as well as the environment.

In order to understand better what we mean with the term 'sustainable' we will refer to the Code for Sustainable Homes as defined in Wikipedia. The Code was officially launched on December 13, 2006, and was introduced as a voluntary standard in England in 2007. The Code complements the system of Energy Performance Certificate for new homes introduced in April 2008 under the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The code works by awarding new homes a star rating from 1 to 6, based on their performance against 9 sustainability criteria which are combined to assess the overall environmental impact. One star is entry level above building regulations, and six stars are the highest, reflecting exemplary developments in terms of sustainability.

The sustainability criteria by which new homes are measured are:

Energy and CO2 Emissions - Operational Energy and resulting emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere
Water - The consumption of potable water from the public supply systems or other ground water resources
Materials - The environmental impact of construction materials for key construction elements
Surface Water Run-off - The change in surface water run-off patterns as a result of the development
Waste - Waste generated as a result of the construction process and facilities encouraging recycling of domestic waste in the home
Pollution - Pollution resulting from the operation of the dwelling
Health and Well-Being - The effects that the dwelling's design and indoor environment has on its occupants
Management - Steps that have been taken to allow good management of the environmental impacts of the construction and operation of the home
Ecology - The impact of the dwelling on the local ecosystem, bio-diversity and land use

So the above sound great about the environment but what about the benefit of the home owner or residents? Research has shown that 75% of the temperature of a property is lost through its walls and roof. This means that maintaining the temperature we want costs us a lot of money either by using heating mechanisms or air conditioning. Especially in countries like Greece where heating oil is used widely for most properties, which at the moment has reached an all time high price due to the oil crisis. At the same time, any artificial type of temperature maintenance has an impact on our human organism. Extensive usage of air conditioning tends to dry off the air or recycle some types of germs. Heating can increase humidity and create breathing problems to an extent.

Having a sustainable home or bio climatic or energy efficient home makes a difference. For example, a study is conducted before constructing the property so that the insulation of the house is done with specialized material; according to the micro climate of the area the house is going to be located. It may cost a little bit more to buy a sustainable home but over time the energy savings will repay the owner. Some analysts have defined this time frame to 10 years. At the end of the day this type of property is better for the world that we will leave to our children, while at the same time it benefits all of us as home owners in terms of savings and quality of life.

For decades people looked to the suburbs and outlying areas of major cities for living options, generally because larger properties could be had at reasonable costs. These days, however, we see a shift toward urban residency and a down-scaling of personal items. Choosing to live downtown, in fact, can make for a greener existence and help lessen your carbon footprint.

The Advantages of Downtown Living - the Green Way

Commuting to work seemed less of a hassle when gas prices were affordable. If you work in the downtown area, chances are buying or renting a condo or loft may have greater appeal. A shorter trip to work, augmented by public transportation or merely the chance at some exercise, definitely proves a more eco-friendly lifestyle. As downtown residences develop, so do surrounding city blocks by establishing grocery stores, boutiques, doctors' offices, and other services. An extensive tour of your downtown with a qualified real estate agent can reveal the convenience of living close to work - daily necessities are readily provided, plus options for entertainment and recreation may increase if your city's maintains concert and sport venues in the vicinity. This could allow you to keep your car in storage or, better yet, sell it and not have to worry about insurance or payments.

As the average loft or apartment within the city may average between a thousand and fifteen hundred square feet, you'll find there may not be enough room to house everything you own. Cutting down on personal items and furniture makes for a more environmentally friendly living space - the less you own, the less energy is required to sustain your home. Add on some green appliances and fixtures like low-flow plumbing, hardwood floors, and eco-friendly lighting and you could save big on utility bills, too!

As a healthier living option, the urban lifestyle has its benefits. If you work in a major downtown area and are done with the lengthy, nerve-wracking commute, consider a closer move to treat not only your sanity, but your wallet.

Backsplashes For Kitchen Improvement

Back splashing your kitchen could be a simple decorating solution to an area that needs a little tlc. There are many different choices for backsplashes, from the acceptable materials such as tile to any unusual products that meets your wants and needs. A simple backsplash addition can make any kitchen look new. There are several different choices when it comes to backsplashes.

CERAMIC TILE
Ceramic tiles offer a huge variety of design possibilities. They come in a vast array of colors, textures and finishes. They give someone on a budget the opportunity to create a custom look and save on installation. The grout, however, must be cleaned and resealed regularly. But, even with that, it makes a beautiful backsplash.

Other Tile
You are not limit to ceramic tile for a backsplash anymore. There are many different types of tile such as vinyl tile, metal tile, mosaic tile, and glass tile. You can purchase a how to install tile books from any home improvement store or any large book store. The tools needed are not many, something to cut the tile with, a square, a trowel, something to measure with, a tile snip tool for small cuts, grout, tile, cement, a grout float, sponge.

GRANITE
The most durable natural stone for backsplashes is granite. However, it should be resealed twice a year to maintain protection from moisture. Granite is versatile just as tile since it comes in many different colors. Unfortunately granite is not a good do itself project. It takes skill and special saws to cut granite. If you still want granite and also want to do it yourself you can purchase granite tile.
On any tiling project you need to give yourself enough time to do it right, and hopefully find someone to help you that has done it before.

STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel is also another choice that many are using now. It gives any kitchen a professional look and easy to clean. Stainless steel comes in panels which you premeasured and have made. There are also stainless steel tiles which you can do yourself basically the same way you do ceramic tiles.
No matter which type of backsplash you choose , it should be something that you can take care of and compliments your kitchen dcor.

Using Solar Lighting to Protect the Environmental and Your Home

Solar lighting lights the indoor and outdoors using lights that are environmentally friendly by deriving energy from the sun.

Having a solar lighting grid system placed on the outside of your house utilizes the sun for energy. When the sun is not out, the lights in your house operate as they normally do, tapping into your local energy source to turn on and off. The nice thing about this system is that you will not lose power. When the sun is out, your energy will come from the sun. At night and during cloudy periods, it will come from your normal energy source.

Solar lighting offers many different advantages to home owners and business owners. For starters, it can dramatically reduce one's energy bill. Those who use solar lighting in a very sunny area, such as California, can reduce their energy bill by up to 50 percent.

Another advantage to using solar lighting is having a back up energy source. Sometimes during a natural disaster, large storms or over use, an area energy grid will go out leaving its citizens without power. Families who have solar grids on their houses, will at least have power during daylight hours. This obviously makes life more comfortable and allows the family to continue their day to day actives.

Going Commercial

Most people think that solar lighting is for homeowners. However, as solar lighting has become more popular and businesses have become more environmentally friendly, businesses have jumped on the solar lighting band wagon. Some businesses do it strictly for the environmental value, others do it as part of a strategic business plan to save money.

Solar lighting panels can be placed outside on commercial buildings. They can also be placed on street lights, in parking lots, on billboards and on outdoor trails. These solar lighting grids offer the same advantages as home-based grids. However, they do offer one more advantage. In the case of a power outage, public ally located solar lighting grids help maintain public safety. In these cases, solar lighting keeps areas well lit instead of leaving them to the dark, keeping the public safe until the lights come back on.

Choosing a Construction Lawyer - Protect Your Business

Whether you like it or not, accidents are a part of the construction business. You may do all you can to avoid them, but they still happen from time to time. This is why choosing a construction lawyer is an important business move. Having a good lawyer helps you protect the value of your business. You don't want to be known as the business owner who constantly has accidents on his construction sites. For any business dealing with construction sites or projects, it is a smart move to hire a lawyer before construction even begins. It can be a difficult task, though.

Choosing a construction lawyer is a good business move for several reasons. It looks good to your employees because they know you are looking out for their safety. You have them covered and protected in case something goes wrong. It shows them that you aren't going to wait around until something happens before you take action. They will be more satisfied with the organization of the business for which they work. Along with being organized, your employees can feel safe knowing you will protect them if something horrible happens. You would lose a lot of employees if you failed to protect their needs on the dangerous construction site.

Along with your employees' sake, choosing a construction lawyer is a wise move for the public as well. This is important for any company that has a job site near people, which the majority have. People often wander onto sites when they are closed down for the day, and even during construction. They want to get a closer look at what is going on. Some people do this because it is dangerous and off-limits. These people often end up injuring themselves and then try to blame your company for the injury. If you didn't have a lawyer on staff, you would be forced to halt construction until everything was taken care of with the individual. If you already had hired a lawyer as a preventative measure, you would be able to continue working while the lawyer dealt with the public.

Choosing a construction lawyer is an important business move for the sake of the business owners as well. They won't have to worry every day about potential accidents because they know they have everything covered by a lawyer. They won't have to deal with the accident by themselves. They have the support of professional lawyers who have dealt with construction accidents before. This alone is a good enough reason for many business owners to hire a construction lawyer beforehand.

Choosing a construction lawyer is brought on by many different reasons. Regardless of the owner's reason, it is a good idea to hire a lawyer at the start of construction to ensure the proper safety of the employees and the public. Doing so will save your company time and money because you won't have to wait around to find one if something goes wrong. They'll already be on your side ready to remedy the situation.

The Secret to a Quality Kitchen on a Tight Budget

Sure, that Italian marble and Viking gas range are ideal for any kitchen, but they may not be part of a conservative budget. Even if you cannot afford all of the best imports from around the world, you can still design a space that you will be proud to spend time in.

One of the best ways to spruce up any space is to add a bit of paint. Adding some new hues to the walls inside of your kitchen will brighten up the area, but those cabinets could use a new coat as well. Whether you decide to stain and varnish or use melamine paint, do not neglect your kitchen cabinets.

Another great, and inexpensive, renovation idea is to change up the backsplash a bit. There are numerous new products on the market that are simply a matter of peel and stick. Or, you could branch out into the ceramic subway tile idea, which is also relatively cost effective.

How are those kitchen curtains looking? If yours are grease stained and faded, it may be time for a bit of a curtain facelift. Add a few cafe inspired curtains to your room by mounting a simple panel across the bottom portion of the window. Try to leave the tops bare for a truly authentic look.

While we are on the subject of curtains, why not skip them altogether? Thin wooden blinds often present a cleaner look than any fabric panel can, and they are surprisingly cheap. If you love your current look, toss the existing panels into the wash to bring the color back into the fabric.

Aside from curtains, paint, and a new backsplash, the cabinet and drawer pulls inside of your kitchen may also need some attention. If you have a bit of extra cash to spare, check out some auction sites online for antique pulls. You will be pleasantly surprised at the difference that new hardware makes.

All of these sprucing up tricks and tips are well under that one hundred dollar mark. Yet, these small changes really make a huge difference inside of any kitchen. Replacing all of the cabinet and countertops is a great idea, but these larger projects can be done at a later time.

It does not have to cost a fortune to renovate your kitchen space. All you really need are a few great ideas, some elbow grease, and a bit of inspiration. As soon as you give your kitchen a new look, you will find that whipping up those nightly meals is a lot easier to do.

Solar Powered Home & Wind Power Generator - How to Eliminate Your Fuel Bills

A solar powered home runs on electricity generated from the sun - the carefully placed home solar panels capture the sunlight and the electricity that comes out of them requires no hooking up to any other supply. A wind power generator does what it says on the tin. The power these methods supply is therefore "free".

Can you imagine not getting an bill for the power that you use?

Fuel is only going to get more expensive in the future, as oil and fossil fuel shortages increase. You probably already think that you pay too much for your electricity. Well there is only going to be one way to make it cheaper - having a solar power house. By generating your own electricity through a home solar panel or wind power generator, or a combination of both, you could reduce your fuel bill by 80%. You could even eliminate it. Some people are actually making money by selling the electricity that they generate back to the electricity companies through the grid!

How does sending THEM a bill sound?

Some people worry that the energy they generate may not be enough to power their home. Well here are some tips to reduce your power usage now, and when you take the step to have a solar power house.

Only use what you need. It may sound obvious, but how often do you leave appliances on when you are not using them? You may not even be in the room, but the light may be on, the television or radio is there in the background.

Resist the temptation to do your laundry until you have a full load. People have halved their washing machine usage by doing this, and therefore halved the amount of electricity they need for it. Who wants to do laundry that often anyway? I know it is my least favorite chore, so this is the perfect excuse for me!

You are reading this article sat at a computer. It may be the one at work, in which case I won't tell the boss! If it is the one at home, then turn off the monitor every time you step away from the computer. You would be surprised how much electricity one of these things burns up.

We all know about energy saving light bulbs, right? Well are all of yours energy saving ones? When they first came out they were not as bright as the other types, but now you can get really good quality bulbs, that are not really much more expensive. And because they last longer, you save money in the long run anyway.

I hope that this has given you some useful ideas on how you can save money with your electricity bills, whether you have a solar powered home or not. Take a look at the links below to find out about how a wind power generator and a home solar panel could help you even more.

A solar powered home is a great way to eliminate your power bill. Get our complete guide at solar power house.

Natural Lighting - Homeowner Tips

One of the benefits of designing in a rooflight into a new property, or installing one in a home or business premise renovation, is that you will be able to enjoy natural light. This will help save energy used for lighting and provide evenly distributed natural light that enhances the rooms below the rooflight.

On a flat or low-pitched roof, the rooflight will probably be a roof lantern with sidelights. The sidelights can be permanently fixed, or be opened to provide ventilation. This can be done either through a manually operated crank rod, or more easily with an electric motor that can be switched to open or close on demand, automatically at set times, or when a rain sensor activates it when it detects rain, mist or dew.

Pitched rooflights come in various shapes that include pyramid, domed, hexagon, octagon, or just plain square. However, the most usual design is rectangular with a hipped or gable end.

Historically, a single glazed rooflight could make the space below it uncomfortably cold in winter months and with inadequate sealing, cold winds and draughts would blow through providing unwanted winter ventilation. As a result, in some cases, the rooflight was reduced in size, or removed completely and boarded over, as the lack of weather proofing and the difficulty of maintenance made them uneconomic and expensive to maintain.

However, modern sealing and double glazing provide much greater thermal efficiency and reduced heating costs. The use of durable hardwood timber for the frames and modern paints to paint them, has also makes the rooflight more owner friendly. Because of its position, the rooflight is exposed to more rain, frost and sunlight than any other painted part of the home. This constant weathering meant that in past times, annual repainting was often required in a difficult to reach position, leading to more expense. However, by using microporous paints and stains, today's frames enjoy outstanding protection against the elements even in harsh northern climates and coastal locations.

It's the introduction of modern construction methods like these that have lead to a renaissance in the use of rooflights in domestic and industrial architecture. What's more, old leaky and draughty rooflights can be replaced with a modern roof lantern that will need little maintenance and provide a more comfortable environment in the space below it.

Moreover, designers and architects also have the opportunity to specify anti-glare coatings or tints for the glazing, or even self-cleaning glass, although these will add to the cost of the rooflight.

In a conservation area or on a listed building, there is often a requirement to meet specified design features. These can usually be met, depending on the age of the property, by including Georgian wire sidelights, Victorian styled stained glass or other glass treatments as appropriate. It only takes a little ingenuity to achieve this and planning officials will generally be pleased as there is little compromise in the period design. Once again, modern construction will mean that the roof lantern will be longer lasting and require less maintenance than what it replaced.

So if you are planning to install a rooflight there are no longer a great number of negative reasons that should put you off. Instead you can look forward to enjoying more natural interior light and a design feature that will be the envy of friends and visitors.

Christopher Cooper's background encompassed training in architecture and traditional boat building, both of these skills being put to good use in developing his roof lanterns business. Starting in 1985 roof lanterns and skylights became a regular item in the order book and whilst these initial projects were 'one offs' it quickly became apparent that there was an increasing need for a standard design which would enable more efficient production. This reduced manufacturing costs, and the savings were reflected in the price to consumer and trade customers. Today he is one of the largest suppliers of roof lanterns in the UK.

Redesign Your Home Into Your Dream Home

What could you do with $150,000? You could buy a small, modest home in some communities. You could sell your home and move to a larger home. Or you could redesign and personalize your current home so that, although it will appear average on the outside, looking undistinguished from the neighbours, there is absolutely nothing average about the interior once the work is complete.

Exactly what sort of project are we talking about? Interior renovations and redesign with minimal, if any, work being done to the exterior of the home. Most often such a project will include all the areas that make up the entertaining zones of a house kitchen, dining room, living room, entry, hallway, and a powder room or washroom basically just the areas that guests would definitely see. Sometimes these projects also include the staircase, and depending on the scope of the space planning changes and original layout of the house, some slight modifications to the bedrooms may come about as well. More often than not, these projects involve structural work, plumbing, electrical, and tons of finishing work.

Usually when such a major project is undertaken, part of the purpose is to create a more open-concept space within the existing exterior walls. Although it is easy to presume that fewer walls equates to fewer costs, this is a major misconception when it comes to renovations, because there are many more issues that have to be addressed:

Chances are that at least one wall to be removed is currently load bearing (structural). The load will have to be temporarily supported until the new permanent structural elements are properly in place. A consultant (structural engineer or similar) should be involved.

In many municipalities, a permit is not required for a simple renovation, but the minute you start touching anything structural a permit becomes a mandatory acquisition and expense not to mention a potential delay if the application was not submitted early enough. Check with your municipality for specific details concerning timing, cost, necessity, and other pertinent information.

When you demolish a wall, you are left with a damaged area of flooring which usually necessitates replacing the entire floor. On occasion you can get away with installing a coordinating or contrasting inlay of another flooring material, but this tends to cost in labour alone what a whole new installed floor would cost.

Demolishing a wall also creates the need for repair on the ceiling and on any adjoining perpendicular walls. Although not an expensive fix, it is certainly costlier than just plastering a few nail holes or other imperfections.

Electrical wiring, outlets and light switches all have to be rewired and relocated.

Pipes, plumbing stacks, ventilation conduits, ducting, and the like, all have to be relocated to be concealed within floor/ceiling constructions and within walls that will remain.

As with any renovation project, labour accounts for approximately 30% of the total budget. Consultants fees (designers, engineers, etc.) and contingencies (unforeseen circumstances) are both higher for this scope of work than for a simple renovation project.

What motivates homeowners to go to this extreme with interior redesign and renovations? There is actually no typical homeowner profile for projects of this scale. Sometimes a house has been purchased inexpensively and putting a large amount of money into renovations would still be within the purchasers budget and not bring the total too far over the market value. Other times a family has lived in the home for many years, the mortgage is either paid off or now quite low, and they just cant imagine moving, so major renovations are the best solution to meet their changing needs. Sometimes such projects come about due to physical needs; major renovations are often required to make a home fully usable to someone in a wheelchair who wants to maintain their independence. It is also common that an older parent moves in with his/her adult child and their family in this case renovations would be done to facilitate both added privacy and improved family space. The reasoning behind investing so much into a home is completely based on personal and/or family-life lifestyles and dynamics, budget and finances, changing needs, a love of the home and its location, and so much more.

The implications of such a major redesign on a home vary as much as peoples reasons for taking on such projects in the first place. Depending on both the specifics of your project, and the community in which your home is located, the value of your home may increase by about as much as the budget of the project, or as little as about 25% of the value of the renovation. Property values could be discussed with a knowledgeable and experienced local real estate agent prior to commencing the project. It is important to remember which information the real estate agent can provide that is of value to you it is not in a real estate agents field of expertise to counsel you concerning wood species for cabinetry, and his/her personal opinions should be taken exactly as such. However, you will want to listen to his/her point-of-view concerning the benefits or negative implications of things such as creating a huge washroom vs. a walk-in closet for the master bedroom, or a home theater room vs. a larger kitchen with a cozier family room. But in the end, it is your needs from your home and space that should have the final word on how the project unfolds. Possible implications extend beyond resale value. Also on those lines though, are property taxes and ease of sell-ability. Even if you are increasing your homes value by $75,000, there is a chance that it will take longer to find the right buyer should you ever decide to sell it is sometimes a bit of a challenge to sell a home priced significantly higher than others in a neighbourhood, no matter the justification for the price.

One implication of large-scale redesign projects, which has to be taken into account during the design phase, is temperature control. Especially if you are opening-up the floor plan, you will want to keep in mind that the walls you have now play a role in stopping cold air from the front door from blowing straight through to the back of your home. In summer months, the walls prevent hot sunlight from reaching areas from all sides. How sound travels through your home will also be affected with fewer walls present. Your requirements from your kitchen ventilation might also have to be reevaluated. If you have any young children, or pets, you may find it more difficult to restrict them from certain areas (such as the kitchen when the oven is hot) without walls or doorways. At the same time though, you will have better visibility of your home from almost any given area. Communication with a family member from the next room will be effortless. The sense of isolation that often comes with being in the kitchen to prepare a meal will be a thing of the past.

With little effort, you can prepare a list pages-long of the pros and cons of open concept floor plans, and major redesign projects in general. Everyone you speak to will have strong opinions about your project, its goals, and the alternatives available to you. Keep in mind that others preferences do not affect how you and your family use your home; some of us function at our best with smaller but more numerous rooms, while others thrive in open space. The only way to ensure that a project of this scale will be all that you dream of and more, is to hire the proper professionals interior designers, engineers, general contractors, or others, early enough in the planning phases. Before committing yourself to a contract with anyone whom you will have to work closely with, make sure that the right chemistry exists between you your input and questions should be welcomed by them, and their responses and reactions to you should give you a sense of confidence.

  • features economical use of water and energy, and
  • results to less waste along the completion of the home remodeling project.

Tips on How to Finish a Basement Wall

The walls are something you should take account of when you finish a basement. Finishing a basement is very important if you want your basement not only to look good. The walls in the basement are very important because they provide the structure for your basement and carry the weight of your home above it.

Tip 1: Make sure your walls are dry enough to work with.

Check how much moisture content your wall has. If it has too much moisture, there are probably leaks either on the walls itself or on the floor.

Tip 2: Install drywall.

Installing drywall to your concrete walls does not take a genius. It is also more time efficient as compared to applying plaster instead. Drywall is also made out of gypsum that helps prevent the spread of fire. When attaching your drywall, make sure that nothing is protruding on its surface (ex. nails).

Tip 3: Add furring strips

Furring strips will prevent water from leaking in your basement and will provide a more leveled wall to work with. A leveled working surface is very important when you finish a basement.

Tip 4: Insulation and Vapor Barriers

Attaching both of them, will aid in possible heat-related problems in your basement .Insulation is important or less heat loss. It is needed to help maintain a suitable room temperature especially during the cold months.

Tip 5: Design your walls.

The design of your walls is really up to you. You can paint over the surface of the drywall or create a textured finish with the use of wooden boards and other similar materials.
To finish a basement wall is one of the few things you should remember if you want to be able to enjoy your basement longer.

Want to learn how to decorate your basement wall a little more creatively? Discover practical basement remodeling ideas online and turn cheap basement ideas into dream basements at a budget.

How to Buy Your Wood Stove

Given all the variety in today's wood burning stove market, when you come to the point of actually buying a stove for your house, the prospect can be intimidating. The good news is that it doesn't need to be. Here are a few tips to make the buying process as simple as possible.

First, choose a wood stove that matches your home size.

Several factors are involved here. In a nutshell, you need to decide what you want your wood stove to accomplish. Are you heating a single room, a floor, or your entire house? Once you after that question, you'll be able to decide what size category you should be looking at.

Fortunately, on the technology side of things, any new-model stove you buy will be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency. This means, practically, that the stoves you consider will all produce clean, radiant, efficient heat--so there's no need to get too concerned about so-called spec numbers like Btu output and square footage ratings. At best, these numbers are very general estimates, because they are not standardized, and vary widely depending on factors like climate, fuel, and house type. That's why stove size is the best way to guide your decision making.

Second, pick out your favorite designs and materials.

If buying a wood stove is part art, part science (I think it is), here's where the art kicks in. After you know what size you need, you can cut loose and let your sense of style be your guide. Case in point: welded steel is cheaper than cast iron and just as durable--but if you're looking for class, it's likely that the clean, sculpted lines of iron stoves will catch your eye.

Go ahead and decide, "Am I looking for heating output only, or heating and style?" In terms of sturdiness and efficiency, there's virtually no difference between iron and welded steel stoves. Designer materials like pewter and soapstone--offered in an array of colors--give you some opportunities to make your stove a conversation piece, but no drop-off in heating ability. So relax and enjoy this part. It's your call.

Third, list any "super powers" your stove should possess.

This is kind of obvious, but what could be worse than buying your stove, only to make a painful discovery a few weeks later? "Hey, where's that built-in spit for roasting small pigs and turkeys?" More seriously, you should ask yourself, "Do I need a wood stove with a cooking surface? How about an ash pan for easy maintenance? Do I have to have a removable fire screen?"

By identifying any non-negotiable features, you'll make your search more focused and make sure you don't regret your decision down the road. With all the manufacturers in the market today, someone is sure to be making the stove you're looking for. So take your time as you compile your feature list. These options pertain to convenience and aesthetics--not vital heating ability--so don't sweat it.

Finally, purchase your wood burning stove from a trustworthy dealer.

In the past, brick and mortar stores were the default place to buy wood stoves--and there continue to be reasons to buy locally, such as the opportunity to talk with an experienced dealer and inspect floor models first hand. Of course, buying via the internet is also a viable route today, and this may be even more true if you have a clear idea of what you're looking for. If that's the case, then shopping around online may lead to discounts. A good online store will have generous return policies and reps to address any questions you have. Whether you buy local or online, by doing your research, you're setting the stage for a happy purchase.

Prevent Falls with Stair Treads - Home Tips

Millions of people are injured each year from falls in the home, but you can help prevent them in your home by using carpet stair treads. Protect your family from dangerous falls and slip related injuries. Stair treads are one easy and inexpensive way to keep your family safe.

Stair treads should be a must in your home if you have children or elderly adults living with you, as these two groups have the greatest risk for fall related injuries. For older adults, a fall can have devastating consequences if it breaks a hip bone or creates another injury. Of fall injuries, a significant number happen on a home's stairs and a study on insurance costs found that only car accidents created more insurance costs than fall injuries.

Many people overlook their stairs when they are making their homes safer. They install alarms and locks, buy mats for their bathtub, and put in smoke detectors. While these safety features are all important, protecting your family from falls is also important. We often take for granted that hand railing will keep everyone safe on the stairs, but this just isn't the case.

Stair tread should provide a non-slippery surface on your stairs. Whether your stairs are concrete, wood, or carpet, you can add additional protection to them. You can find stair treads made out of rubber, metal, or braided materials. You can also use carpet treads on wood floors to stop people from slipping on them.

You'll find that buying carpet stair treads is cheaper than installing full carpet on your stairs. The treads will also look attractive next to wood flooring. Look for treads that will not only look great but will also allow you to see the depth and width of the steps. This will also help individuals walk up and down safely.

In addition to the stair treads, encourage your family to turn on the lights when they need to go up or down the stairs. Many people try to navigate in the dark and either slip or they trip on items that have been left on the stairs. Using the lights will help you see any obstacles and help you see where you need to place your feet to safely make it up or down.

Installing carpet stair treads will help you keep your family and guests safe from unintentional falls. They are easy to install and will cost you less than fully carpeting your stairs. Don't forget to make your stairs safer as you add safety items to other parts of your home.

An often overlooked safety feature for your home is carpet stair treads

Don't Make This Mistake When Buying a Home

Home purchasing checklists provide protection for consumers with useful information for future home repairs or current home repairs that will need to be done before the home is sold. Home inspectors often use checklists like these, while they're inspecting the home.

If more home shoppers used home inspection checklist while shopping for houses, we would probably have more satisfied homebuyers than dissatisfied ones. Recently just purchasing a home, we had our real estate professional, the previous homeowner's real estate professional and a mortgage lender, involved in the purchase of the property.

There was a home inspection report from the current homeowners, available for us to look at. It provided us with the damaged parts of the home that were repaired or replaced. Some of these repairs were from termite damage and it was stated so on the report. This was helpful information for us as we walked around the home inspecting it for damage.

The work that was repaired to look satisfactory and the rest of the home had minor damage. Listening to one of the real estate sales people that were involved in the transaction, you would've thought we would get in the deal of a lifetime and they had nothing but good news to say about the product they were representing. I easily understood that, this person could have influenced some one into believing that the home was in great shape, if they didn't have a home inspection checklist with them.

The home had been re-carpeted, painted and was in generally good shape. The problems with the home, were the old windows that were hard to open, the heating unit leaked gas, the tile flooring that ran through the kitchen and a large room addition looked great, except for one thing, they installed the tile over linoleum.

This eventually will have to be replaced as the tile starts to separate from the linoleum. While I'm writing this article, there's about 40 square feet of tile that needs to be replaced, because it's popping up and cracking.

A home purchasing checklist does not guarantee that you will find everything but can't eliminate some of the things that homeowners have the biggest problems with. If you could just eliminate one of these problems, the small price of purchasing, one of these checklists would be worth it.

Home purchasing checklists provide protection for the shopper and I would recommend, never shopping for a home without one.

Fixing Your Leaking Toilet

Let me explain how a toilet works. First when you go to flush the toilet a little arm pulls a rubber flapper up and lets the water drain into the toilet bowl. The water draining into the toilet bowl forces the old water out along with the number two or number one waste and extremities.

If the toilet sounds like it is running there is a good chance that the seal between the rubber flapper and the plastic rain at the bottom of the toilet is broken somehow. The sound you are hearing is water running around this ring and in to the toilet bowl.

This leak is actually causing no damage to the toilet itself but is wasting water. Hence the water bill will be a little higher if you don't fix the leaking toilet. The best way to find out if this is actually your problem is to take the toilet tank lid off. Then stick your hand down into the toilet bowl and press gently on the rubber flap.

If the water stops leaking or starts running faster this is your problem. Turn the water off to the toilet. There will be a shut off valve on the wall under your toilet bowl in the bathroom. After you turn the water off removed the plastic flap and examine it.

You will be looking for a warped toilet flap or of some sort or grooves on the flapper itself. Take the toilet flapper down to your local home improvement store and buy a new one. Go home and replace the new toilet flapper and this should solve 90% of your leaking toilet problems.

There is one more thing it could be. With the toilet tank lid off, check to see if water is overflowing into the little round plastic pipe. This plastic pipe should have a small hose running from the float valve assembly into it.

If the water is over flowing from the toilet tank into this little plastic pipe you will need to adjust the float.

First thing you will need to do is while the toilet is running lift up on the float lever arm. If the water stops you can simply bend the metal arm of the float lever. The purpose of bending the arm will force the float deeper into the water there for stopping the water from rising over the small tube in the center of your toilet.

There are few parts to a toilet and most parts can be purchased at your local hardware or home improvement centers. Toilet repairs like this can be made simple and the parts used to replace are inexpensive.

Happy Toilet Repairing.

Reduce Power Consumption With Homemade Solar System

Renewable energy such as solar power is an amazing thing, but it is not easily accessible or affordable to everyone in its current state. However, that does not mean that there aren't things that we can do right now in order to cut down on our energy consumption. We can start by embracing the concept of using solar for electricity. Our electric bills are one of the largest expenses in owning a house. We need power to run all our electrical appliances. The demand for electricity kept increasing but the supply is limited. With the current situation, electric cost will definitely increase in the near future. Are the any ways we can cut our power usage? This article will provide some information on how we can reduce our home power usage by having a homemade solar electric system.

To generate power from solar energy, all we have to do is build a solar array. Solar array is made from a series of solar cells linked together. Solar cells will produce electric current when exposed to sun light. The electric current can be diverted and stored in deep cycle batteries. Batteries in general can only maintain Direct Current (DC). Since 99 percent of our home appliances run on Alternate Current (AC), we will need to use an inverter to change the DC to AC.

Using renewable energy such as solar power is not the ultimate answer to solve our energy issue but it is a start toward energy independence. We have been very wasteful on our home energy consumption. To reduce our electricity bills, we should be more mindful on how we use energy at home and to minimize wastage.

Want to know how you can build your own Home Solar Panels to reduce your electricity bill for under $300? If you are good with hand tools, start a Do It Yourself (DIY) project to construct a residential solar array to harness free energy from the sun. What you will need is a step by step instructional guide. Get a comprehensive Solar Power For Homes guide review at http://www.DIYSolarHomes.com/.

How to Choose the Right Remodeling Contractor

Remodeling your home yourself is no easy task. Some of the duties involved with remodeling are best left to the professionals. While acquiring the right assistance in itself is no easy task, here are some tips on how to find the perfect remodeling contractor for your remodeling project.

Remodeling contractors can be located using yellow-book listings or listings on the internet. They can also be referred by word of mouth. Select about a handful of contractors who specialize in what you're looking for. Thinking of retiling your bathroom and replacing appliances? Surely there is a contractor who specializes in bathroom modifications. Installing crown molding in your den? There are plenty of remodeling contractors who specialize in various home transformations.

After you've made your selection it's time to make your phone calls. A good contractor is one that the client feels comfortable speaking with. The contractor should be knowledgeable and approachable. They should be able to understand your wants and needs and have the tools and confidence necessary to get the job done. Ask for pricing quotes and ask what all is included in the contract price. Negotiate if necessary and see what kind of deal the contractor can offer for the work you're requesting.

Ask for references and feedback from happy (and even unhappy) customers. Assess the contractor's strengths and weaknesses. Feel free to call these references, including older customers to assess how the remodeling work has been maintained over the years. Inquire to the customer service involved with the remodeling job, and the overall job itself. If you can see samples of finished products, request them.

After you've acquired all of your potential offers, assess the cost vs what you're actually getting. Never just go for the lowest bidder. The lower the price may equal a lower quality of work, and that in itself is a bad investment. Consider your needs and the difficulty of the job. High bids may equate to good workmanship, and you should definitely take that into account.

Now that you've reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of hiring a contractor and assessed your needs for your remodeling job, it's time to hire! Good luck in your search for the perfect remodeling contractor.

Dehumidifiers and Their Uses - House Tips

Excessive of anything is bad for your health, and the same goes for humidity in your home. Coupled with the heat of summer, humidity beyond the ideal figures of 30-50 percent in your house can cause numerous problems to your health. Respiratory problems such as flus and colds are caused by the environmental changes encouraging the growth of mold spores and dust mites. Moreover, damage to stored food items, furniture and other home appliances can happen from excessive exposure to increased levels of humidity.

The telling signs of excessive humidity are condensation on windows, wet spots on walls, ceilings or tiles. If stuffiness is felt or the air has a musty smell or odor, there is an increased chance of allergies etc and a dehumidifier is usually needed. Dehumidifiers are the easiest way to avoid such problems. Available in a variety of sizes and types they work in the same way i.e. they draw in humid air, dry it, retain the water for later discharge and release the dryer air into the indoor area. This process also results in bringing down the temperature as well.

Dehumidifiers are usually portable to be moved from one room to another in order to get your whole dehumidified. The increased electricity bill will pinch if used around the house in such a manner but considering the damage to one's home and family, it is well worth it. It is also important to empty the device in a regular basis as the stagnant water or residue attracts bacteria and germs thus defeating the purpose of the device.

Due to the different types of dehumidifiers available, one has to prioritize the areas of your home to dehumidify. First priority is given to basements as they are prone to excessive humidity. Basements dehumidifiers are therefore among the commonest followed by similar devices in places like laundry rooms. However, in climates where humidity is a lot everywhere in a house, living room, dens or recreation rooms are prime candidates for which smaller portable devices are ideal.

Besides getting a dehumidifier of a capacity according the place where it is used, proper maintenance is necessary to keep it functioning properly as mentioned before. One factor enabling better upkeep is the relative humidity outside the house, which will dictate whether more care is needed or not. For example a clogged filter will make bacteria grow more easily or a make the device function less efficiently, thereby reducing capacity to dehumidify a room and also using more electricity.

Another important factor is the extent of control over your device. For this it's important that you ensure your dehumidifier has a hygrometer and humidistat to control the precise percentages of humidity levels in the air. Although they might not be available in smaller models, they are indispensable in larger ones. Furthermore, dehumidifiers that have convenient ways of discharging excessive levels of water are easier to use and maintain.
